Lapd Fn 509 - Last month, FN America, a division of Belgium-based FN Herstal, announced that the Los Angeles Police Department selected the FN 509 MRD-LE as its new service pistol after a highly competitive and rigorous qualification process. Introduced to the military, law enforcement and civilian markets in 2017, the striker-fired polymer-frame semi-automatic pistol is manufactured in Columbia, South Carolina.
According to FN America, LAPD officers training in marksmanship, tactical maneuvers and precision target missions will now have a more accurate and reliable handheld.

During the LAPD weapon tests, the FN 509 competed against several competitors in a 20,000-round endurance qualification, which it passed without a single malfunction. It exceeded all the requirements the LAPD was looking for in its new service pistol

The contract with the LAPD can be seen as the result of FN's effort to produce a handgun for the US military's XM17 Modular System (MHS) competition, which began in September 2015. FN Herstal entered a pistol with a polymer frame, point - fired. based on the UN FNS-9 Compact. However, after Sig Sauer won the competition in January 2017 with its modified version of the P320, FN American entered the market with a version. It came on the FN 509. In August, the LAPD confirmed that it had selected the FN 509 MRD-LE as its new service weapon.
According to the release from FN America, this first shipment will be issued to new recruits and instructors at one of the LAPD's training schools. The gun was selected during "extensive" weapons testing, including a 20,000-round endurance test, the company said.

"This training will help build the foundation that your team of firearms instructors will use when training recruits and officers in the FN 509 MRD-LE pistol."
According to the company, the FN 509 MRD-LE has improved accuracy and flexibility thanks to the patented FN Low-Profile Mounting System. The pistol also features a hammer-forged barrel with a recessed target crown, tapered striker and a flat, duty-rated trigger and 3-dot tritium iron sights, the release states.

One of the best things to happen to the pistol and firearms community was the US Army XM17 Modular System (MHS) competition. The Army announced the competition in 2015 and in January 2017 crowned the Sig Sauer P320 as the winner. Most people know that Glock offered the Glock 19x, but they may not have known that Beretta, Smith & Wesson, CZ, FN and several others also presented options. The FN 509 was one of the updated modern options.
Overall, the Army's more modern needs came with some good choices from well-known weapon makers to replace the aging Beretta M9. These upgrades benefit the entire firearms community.

FN is known in the military world for making reliable and capable firearms. From the SCAR to the M249 and M240B, the FN dominated much of the US and NATO military small arms market. In fact, the United Nations produced the M16A2 Basic Combat Weapons Training. In the US Army and US Marine Corps, almost everyone is involved in combat arms and training on UN products. Support units are likely to have UN squads and even squad weapons.
At the request of the Army, the FN entered the FN 509 as an updated version of the Compact FNS-9. The Compact is a polymer-framed, point-fired semi-automatic pistol. It has no manual safety releases or an ambidextrous mock.

The FN tried to learn from the mistakes of the Beretta M9, one of the biggest of which was that the safety worked backwards. This is not ergonomically intuitive or easy to manipulate at all. Especially in high stress situations. Additionally, the M9's mag release was configured for right-handed shooters only. It is clear that the UN wanted to create a better solution. And while the Department of Defense (DoD) is obsessed with hand safety (probably, sometimes, with good reason), the lack of hand safety has probably hurt the FN and Glock in the Army competition.

Various versions of the FN 509 are currently available on the market, in civilian and law enforcement (LE) configurations. However, it is only in recent years that the UN has begun to take market share in the civil arms community.
On August 10, 2021, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced the FN 509 MRD-LE as the winner of the duty pistol competition. The LAPD is the third largest police department in the country behind New York City and Chicago. With around 10,000 officers, standardization is important. So far, they have carried a mix of Beretta, Glock, Smith & Wesson and Kimber pistols.
The LAPD evaluated the FN 509, along with other pistols, in a rigorous 20,000-round test. There was no malfunction of the FN 509. Needless to say, it is a qualifying test.
Chris Cole, vice president of sales and marketing at FN America, said of the evaluation, "There was a high performance standard to meet exceeding all the requirements the LAPD asked for in its new service pistol."

"With over a million rounds in development, the FN 509's reputation for durability has been proven here again and gives LAPD officers a better weapon they can rely on in the toughest policing environments," said Cole. And these days, with everyone training directly on the Glock, new products have to meet such high standards.
One of the things the LAPD found attractive about the FN 509, in addition to the durability and reliability tests, were the sights. The UN says on its website,
"The superior accuracy of the FN 509 MRD-LE begins with the patented FN™ Low-Profile Mounting System. Adapted from its original development for US Army small arms trials, it gives officers more accuracy and flexibility than any other handgun another."
