I think it's fair for me to say outright that I own several Glocks (including the Glock 17 Gen-4). Therefore, I may be a bit biased in my perception. With that in mind, I don't like everything about the Glock - and I probably never will. My personal opinion is that it is important to go beyond brand loyalty, especially when it comes to firearms.

It's no secret that the Glock 17 holds a respectable position in the gunsmithing community. With widespread use in both public and private operations, the G17 essentially became the standard among full-size pistols. Redesigned in the 1980s, this Austrian-made polymer-framed 9mm pistol is finding increased use. Whether you're a Glock fan or not, its reputation is undeniable.

Glock released the Gen-5 line in 2017 as the latest generation (at the time of publication of our article). Every generation brings change. Some of these changes seen in the Gen-5 G17 are relatively minor, while others are more noticeable. An upgraded barrel, no finger grooves, a beveled and flared magazine, and upgraded sights can be found on the Gen-5 model.

With a full frame and long barrel, the Glock 17 is really comfortable for most people. If you are used to shooting compact, single barrel firearms, the G17 is the perfect weapon for you. Not really, but you get the idea.

When I was first handed the Gen-5 Glock 17 for this review, I felt right at home with it - it wasn't all that different from my Gen-4 Glock 17. Changes are not so drastic, and in general the device fits comfortably in the hand, except for the absence of notches for the fingers.

Like other Glocks, the frame is boxy and the aesthetics are blocky. The ergonomics and looks of Glocks are something people either love or hate.

I quickly noticed the flared magazine as you see on the Gen-4 G17. For many, this is a nice touch that directly relates to faster and smoother magazine changes.

In terms of accuracy, I feel very confident with the G17 even beyond 25 yards. I noticed and appreciated the updated trigger while shooting. This is something I'll touch on later, but the improvements seem important.

In terms of camouflage, I don't see many trying to wear the G17 discreetly. Unless you're a big person, the bezel is probably going to be a little difficult to hide effectively without a large layer. With that said, I feel that the frame works well on a waist belt that can be worn on a jacket. Want to take your Glock with you and need something smaller? Look at the Glock 19 or Glock 43.

One of the most common complaints I hear about Glock pistols is about the trigger. Most people don't like the typical Glock trigger, including me. While the standard trigger can be adjusted in my opinion, the secondary market options are usually good for Glocks.

The Gen-5 G17 trigger improvements are noticeable to me. The smooth pull and predictable lift really helped with the range as I increased my range. A typical blade guard is built into the trigger. The shooter must press this bald head to fire the pistol. I noticed that the reset was dry and allowed me to quickly return to the "wall" for the next shot.

My testing of the Gen-5 G17 used for this review showed an average trigger pull of 5.4 pounds, which is in line with the advertised trigger pull.

I was lucky enough to pass on the standard Glock polymer scope for this review. We all know this to be true - stock polymer scopes are usually dull and difficult to shoot. The model I tested was equipped with Ameriglo night sights. Although these are not my favorite scopes, they suit me well.

The colored front sight combined with the darkened rear is generally a solid iron sight configuration. I found that I needed to aim a little lower, but other than that I have no problem with the sights provided.

Of all the guns on the market, the Glock is especially known for its simple and functional design. Gen-5 Glock 17 provides mostly straight and pleasant shooting. I enjoy shooting Glock pistols and usually don't have any major design issues. This doesn't mean that I don't have things I'd rather change.

One of the more unique aspects of the Gen-5 G17 is the built-in double-sided latch. I thought it was a bit strange considering it sat right under the index finger in the frame like a right-handed shooter. Double-sided issues of the magazine are featured in the Gen-5 frame. This once again shows the level of inclusiveness that Glock strives for.

While the G17's Gen-5 frame and shutter provide plenty of texture and grip, I still find myself wondering how nice it is to have serrations on the front shutter. I thank Glock for listening to the feedback and throwing out the finger groove here. The "one size fits all" approach is usually not ideal when it comes to grip structures.

As I mentioned earlier, the Glock 17 embodies that primary weapon feel for many with smooth recoil control. My ability to track the sights for subsequent shots seems remarkably effective with the Glock 17. Whether or not this comes from experience training with Glocks is up for debate.

As part of this review, I performed a muzzle velocity test using the Federal Premium HST 147 Gr. Ammunition - ordinary cartridge for self-defense. For this test, I used the Labradar device and fired 5 shots as my test group. I will preface the results by saying that Federal advertises a muzzle velocity of 1000 fps from a 4” barrel.

From my perspective, it's really hard to go wrong with the Glock line. The Gen-5 Glock 17 offers undeniable value for the price and will definitely come in handy when you need it most. Glock variants may not look the most stylish or have all the bells and whistles, but they work in just about any environment and with just about any type of ammunition.

Aftermarket accessories and parts are readily available for Glock pistols due to their popularity in the market. In today's industry, finding the right holsters and flashlights is not difficult.
