Many travelers do not pay much attention to the type of aircraft when choosing a flight. After all, whether you're flying an Airbus A321 or a Boeing 737, it's fair to assume that the in-flight experience of the two airlines will be similar. At the very least, one would expect the experience from one American Airlines 737 to another to be similar.

But that's not the case with American Airlines today. Airlines are working on refurbishing the interior of their domestic flagship Boeing 737 and Airbus A321 aircraft. On the 737, AA will add 12 economy seats per plane. "Slim" seats have less padding and the bathroom is 7 inches smaller.

When the project, ironically named "Oasis Project," is completed, these cramped conditions will be seen across the fleet. Meanwhile, the American Airlines 737 has some big differences.

I have recently flown both the Legacy American Airlines (LAA) and the Project Oasis Boeing 737. Here are the differences between the Project Oasis aircraft:

One of the most dramatic differences between the two planes was found in the bathroom. Airplane bathrooms are not spacious, especially on domestic flights. But AA decided to install a much smaller bathroom as part of the Oasis project remodel.

While the plane's bathroom before the renovation was 31 inches from wall to wall, the new Project Oasis bathroom has been reduced to just 24 inches at its widest point.

After my first flight on the American Airlines 737 MAX, I wrote that this is probably the worst part of this plane. Soon after, an AA flight attendant complained that the bathroom was small. That didn't stop AA from installing the same bathroom on a Boeing 737 as part of the Oasis project.

It is interesting that the minimum width of the two types of bathrooms was the same. This was surprising considering that on service flights I have seen passengers of a certain size struggling to get out of the 737 MAX bathroom.

However, when it comes to sinks, the main difference is definitely noticeable. The non-retrofitted aircraft sink is large enough to wash hands comfortably.

However, the length of the Oasis bathroom sink is 5.5 inches or less. Even small hands can feel big. I didn't measure the depth, but the Project Oasis sink is definitely shallow.

Note that American Airlines did not choose to install a small bathroom in first class. The only measurement difference I found between the two configurations is rounding.

This is probably the first difference passengers will notice between the two types of aircraft. Many traditional American Airlines planes have clear, bright screens for in-flight entertainment, but Project Oasis planes do not.

FII: Yes, this means that American Airlines is removing seats with relatively new screens and replacing them with new seats without screens. The decision will also hurt AA's finances. Granted AA planned to use these screens for at least a few more years, but now they need to accelerate the amortization of their costs.

American Airlines Moves Full Steam Ahead With 737 And A321 Retrofits

On Project Oasis flights, American Airlines encourages passengers to "bring your own device" and watch movies and TV shows for free over Wi-Fi. But unless you're traveling with a tablet or watching it on a laptop, you can't keep watching the entertainment on your phone.

The good news, though, is that you'll have nearly the same entertainment options whether you're watching on a seatback monitor or on your own device. In September, 175 films will be shown on built-in monitors, and 173 films will be released via the ViaSat system. Both offer around 143 hours of TV programming.

You may remember the ruckus American Airlines caused when it shared plans to install seats with just 29 inches of pitch. Although that plan was scrapped, both the AA 737 MAX and Project Oasis aircraft have pitch of 30 inches in standard economy and 33 inches in the main cabin additionally with extra legroom. This means AA extra legroom seats (33") have a narrower pitch than some JetBlue standard legroom seats (34").

The Project Oasis flight could only measure 36 inches, but first class should have a pitch of 37 inches.

Nonetheless, American Airlines points out that the new interior has more personal space and legroom than the old one. Sitting down, I was surprised to find that my knees were not touching the back of the front seat.

How is it possible? Part of this is achieved by the shape of the seat. However, what you can achieve that way is limited. The rest of that knee room is created by reducing the seat trim. On Project Oasis flights, we measured only 2 inches of seatback padding in economy class and 3 inches in first class.

That's a big difference from traditional American Airlines 737s, where you'll find over 3 inches of back padding in economy class and a whopping 5.5 inches in first class.

One of the advantages of the Oasis project was the "bigger overhead bin". While some American Airlines planes could make better use of overhead bin space, the classic 737 was by no means lacking.

On my flights in both versions of the AA 737, I didn't notice any overhead bins. However, an AA spokesperson confirmed that the Oasis project's overhead bins are indeed large. The not-yet-upgraded 737 features a "Boeing Ski Interior Pivot Bin," and the Project Oasis was retrofitted with Boeing's new "Space Bin."

This may sound similar, but there are differences. Boeing advertises that the space basket can accommodate six carry-on bags, rather than the four that fit on the Ski Interior's previous axle. This means an increase in bag capacity by 50%.

Wi-Fi: From the time the first Project Oasis aircraft entered service in May 2018 until June 2019, one of the benefits of flying a Project Oasis aircraft was access to high-speed satellite Wi-Fi. I knew that. That's because AA will be installing the ViaSat Wi-Fi antennas as soon as the Oasis project is completed. But it doesn't make a difference anymore. All 304 Boeing 737-800s now have satellite Wi-Fi.

Seat width: The Boeing 737 is not known for being wide. Nor did the Oasis Project mods do wonders to make it even bigger. That being said, the Project Oasis armrest is much smaller, giving you a bit more hip room, but it doesn't serve much of its purpose as an armrest.

After learning about the differences, you probably have a preference about the type of aircraft you want to get. However, when it comes to booking flights, checking in for flights and viewing flights on the AA app, the two aircraft are almost identical. .

The aircraft type is Boeing 737-800, abbreviated as 738. For example, this is a Legacy American Airlines 737 flight. It has an in-flight entertainment screen and comfortable seats.

Astute readers may notice one difference. The Wi-Fi symbol on the Project Oasis aircraft has an indicator indicating high-speed Wi-Fi, while the LAA aircraft has a Wi-Fi symbol without a pin. AA has now completed the satellite Wi-Fi retrofit of all 737 aircraft, so all 737s should have high-speed ViaSat connectivity. However, the two positions now show different Wi-Fi indicators.

However, there is one surefire way to distinguish the Oasis 737 project from non-modified aircraft. That's first class all right. On Project Oasis flights, first class rows are rows 1-4 and LAA aircraft are numbered 3-6. Also, as shown below, the same flight may vary per day between the two arrangements.

American Takes Delivery Of The Last Boeing 737 800, The Fleet Is Now Repainted

Flying in a constellation of two aircraft back-to-back provided a strong example of the direction American Airlines is taking with its domestic fleet. American Airlines has "paired" its Boeing 737 aircraft with 160 seats, the industry average, in-flight entertainment screens at every seat, human-sized bathrooms, large trash cans, comfortable seats, satellite-based could provide Wi-Fi for

Instead, American will remove seats with in-flight entertainment screens and sleek new bathrooms from its sleek newer Boeing 737s, and add 12 more economy seats. While we're confident this decision looks good in managing the financial spreadsheets used to plan this renovation, it doesn't exactly match the passenger experience.
