Handgun: The Pros And Cons Of These Heavy Duty Revolvers

Guns are reactive tools. They are worn on a person to respond to a threat. They can be kept at home ready to respond to threats in the home. If we have a warning, then we are most often advised to use a rifle or a shotgun.
The gun is then a weapon of opportunity. Although handguns are not the most powerful firearms, we are most likely to have them on hand when a firearm is needed to save a life. I spent a few months evaluating the Judge Taurus and came away with a positive opinion of the special purpose revolver.
The Judge is a 5-shot revolver chambered in .410 or .45 Colt. That means true versatility. For the same reason, the design limits the accuracy and range of the revolver. As a pure home defender at short range, Referee Bik has merit.

There is a significant argument that it is critical to get on target quickly and get a hit – every hit – very quickly. The truth is. I learned that it is better to slow down and get the center than to miss quickly. This does not mean that rapid intervention is not possible; it just takes practice.
The referee addresses this need by offering a shot. The .410 bore isn't powerful, but with the right load—and this is key—it offers a viable defensive option. Surprisingly, my assessment suggests that the Bull Judge could be viable for close range predator protection as well. My test piece is perhaps the most common Judge (there are multiple options), a steel-frame revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel.
The revolver is light enough, handles better than its clumsy appearance suggests, and offers a good probability for those who practice. The cut, finish and flow of the action are good. The revolver has a red optical sight. This scope offers a good point of aim and helps to acquire the target quickly.
The short smoothbore that fires the case is illegal, the .410 and .45 Colt are close enough that Taurus was able to design and manufacture a revolver chambered for both the .410 and .45 Colt cartridges. There's some looting, but it's pretty shallow.
Chattanooga Shooting For Dealers
Like all double-action revolvers, the Judge is easy to handle. Open the cylinder, load the chambers and pull the trigger to fire. There is no access to the pedestal and no security of operation. The concept is to allow the shooter to get a quick hit with a shot. Although each individual shotgun round does not carry a lot of energy, the effect of multiple projectile hits at the same time offers excellent potential for injury.
You may have seen the half-baked videos and hype where the Taurus referee is fired at a target and the target is full of hits. Birdshot is a small shot designed to humanely kill a bird with a few shots. It is in no way useful for personal defense. As a full-sized rifle, the shot is good for training, but not for personal defense. A load of 7 to 9 rounds carries hundreds of small balls that form a pattern.
In a typical personal defense range, this pattern ranges from 18 to 32 inches. This is 7 yards, beyond that shot it's useless. Worse, the small shot only penetrates a few centimeters. An offender wearing a heavy winter jacket may not be injured at all. At about 15 feet, the Federal 4 load, carrying the No. 3 shot, has a cohesive pattern of less than three inches. This is the preferred load for those using the .410 load for personal defense.
The Federal load is advertised at about 750 fps, but is actually over 800 fps in the Judge. The total carrying capacity is 292 branches. Winchester offers a PDX load with a total capacity of over 300 grains, with three flat disc and BB Shot loads. With this load, the pattern is often quite large (up to 16 inches by 15 feet) with the discs hitting the center of the target.

The Hornady .410 defensive load features a .41 caliber slug followed by two round balls. The slug usually tracks directly to the target point with the spheres radiating around the center. It is essential to plot the shot on a paper target to determine how the shot travels at 5 to 10 yards.
In my opinion, 7 yards is the outer range for these loads, although Hornady's FTX design could be useful a little further out. Downline, buckshot, and specialty loads are useful for home defense and short-range predator defense. Penetration tests in water jugs and wet newsprint show that these loads will cause serious injury.
Birdshot can penetrate a six-inch gallon jug, and some will get into another jug, but very little. The Federal's 2 ½ inch shell with 4 OOO balls penetrates over 24 inches, which might equal 18 inches in gelatin. This is great.
The Winchester PDX load shows a much larger pattern. However, the three discs in the PDX offer a 3x4 pattern at 15 feet. A much larger sample consists of 12 BBs. The Hornady FTX slug penetrates 15 inches from this revolver, with two round balls totaling 3 to 5 inches at 15 feet.

These heavy loads should produce devastating results at 15 to 21 feet, a magical average range of 7 yards. In fact, it's more likely across the room or bedroom. The referee must be on target, but the pattern has expanded enough to help hit 10 to 15 feet. This gun is not useful at distances greater than 21 feet with a shot.
Another option is to load the Judge with .45 Colt cartridges. To comply with federal pistol and shotgun ammunition law, the Judge is a .45 Colt revolver capable of firing .410 caliber. The barrel is grooved. The long jump of the .45 Colt bullet from the chamber to the muzzle seems to limit both velocity and accuracy. In some cases this is true. However, my latest testing shows that this loss isn't always what we think it might be.
The Judge is strong enough for the heaviest loads, including hard-throwing SWC bullets. It depends on how much recoil tolerance you have. A good choice for personal defense is Hornady Critical Defense. This 185 grain bullet has a good reputation for expansion and penetration. Velocity is 891 fps from a three-inch Taurus Judge barrel. The recoil is modest. This charge hits the target. At 15 yards, five shots from a fixed firing position produced a 3-inch group. This is accurate enough for personal defense.
Another option worth considering is the 225 grain Winchester PDX JHP. This load offers a powerful punch at 780 fps. This bullet weight offers plenty of momentum. The .45 Colt is one of the few pistols that does well without bullet expansion. This has been proven in the Old West and in many encounters since then.

A solid choice is the Winchester 255 grain lead bullet. This bullet leaves the judge at 770 fps. (And 778 fps from a 4 ¾-inch revolver on hand for comparison.) Penetration is about 18 inches, perfect for personal defense, but recoil is moderate. It's also a pretty accurate load with a 3-inch group at 15 yards. If the owner of the judge expects a long trial,
