First class personnel are also expected to perform tasks efficiently and improve their specialty skills. First-class pilots should also expect to begin planning their career goals and additional educational training. This includes a bachelor's degree program. Their pay grade is E-3.
Senior Airman in the United States Air Force is the fourth lowest enlisted rank and directly above pilot first class. It is equivalent to the rank of Specialist or Corporal in the Army/Marines, and Petty Officer 3rd Class in the Navy/Coast Guard. Senior Pilot is the first enlisted rank that is rarely awarded to Air Force aircraft. They have greater responsibility and are expected to be more knowledgeable than younger aircrew.
Senior pilots must be technically proficient in their skills or be close to proficient. More experienced senior pilots may also supervise younger pilots. Most senior airmen are expected to begin developing leadership skills toward becoming a noncommissioned officer (NCO). The Air Force promotes a first pilot (A1C) to senior aircraft after 36 months of service (TIS) and 20 months of time in grade (TIG), or 28 months of TIG, whichever comes first. Outstanding first-class pilots, limited to no more than 15 percent of the total, may be promoted to senior aircraft six months earlier, in a competitive process called Below-the-Zone, which usually involves standing before a competitive board. Senior pilots are expected to be technically proficient and begin to develop leadership skills, and may be expected to supervise a lower-ranked pilot.
Senior airmen must attend the six-week Air Leadership School, the Air Force College's first course of professional enlisted military education, before being promoted to the rank of sergeant. SrA with no expected promotion and between three and six years of TIS, can attend Airman Leadership School. Their pay grade is E-4.
This is the first non-commissioned officer rank in the Air Force, and also the first Air Force rank in which promotion is achieved on a competitive basis.

Sergeants are expected to be technically competent and function as first-rate supervisors within a 'work center'. Once selected for promotion, senior airmen must attend six weeks of Airman Leadership School, which teaches them basic leadership skills and how to write performance reports to become a sergeant. SrA with no expected promotion and between three and six years of TIS, can attend Airman Leadership School. The term of address is "Team Sergeant" or "Sergeant". Senior year of service is 20 years as of 2018. Their pay grade is E-5.
